原來它們發光的部分是在腹部最後兩節，這兩節在白天是灰白色，在黑夜才能睜拆發出光亮。光是通過明凳透明的表皮而發出的，表皮下面是一些能發光的細胞，發光細胞的下面是另一些能反射光線的細胞，可以看到其中充滿著小顆粒，稱為線粒體。線粒體能把身體里所吸收的養分氧化，合成某種含有能量的物質。發光細胞里含有很多線粒體，說明它們能製造比較多的含有能量的物質。發光細胞還含有兩種特別的成分：一種叫做熒光素激早旅，一種叫做熒光酶。熒光素和含能量的物質結合，在有氧氣時，受熒光酶的催化作用，使化學能轉化為光能，於是產生光亮。螢火蟲常常一閃一閃地發光，是因為它能控制對發光細胞的氧氣供應的緣故。
螢火蟲發光的顏色不同，是由於它們所含的熒光素和熒光酶各不相同。螢火蟲的發光有引誘異性和使同類聚集的作用，我們可以看到捉在小玻璃瓶里的螢火蟲可引誘在較遠處的螢火蟲向小瓶飛來。
